Index Color Separations with Underbase:

Index Color Separation:
Index Color Separation is a method of separation, which for converting images uses stochastic square dots of equal size instead of a halftone. Custom Color Separation: If you need special colors, please choose colors from the Pantone® Matching System (PMS) and indicate numbers on your order.
Index separation is a separation method that converts images using stochastic square dots of equal size instead of elliptical halftones. Although an index separation isn’t right for every design, it does have many advantages for printers:
Index separation is a separation method that converts images using stochastic square dots of equal size instead of elliptical halftones. Although an index separation isn’t right for every design, it does have many advantages for printers:
- No Moire!!! The stochastic bitmap dots burn to mesh easily without the chance of a moire.
- No ink buildup. Since the square dots sit side by side like a grid or puzzle, there’s no heavy ink build up.
- Prints look consistent printed on any colors, lights, darks, or brights. Shirt color does not effect index seps the way they can with elliptical dots.
- Less variables on the press. A good index separation eliminates many press variables you can encounter with other types of separations. The 2 main things to watch on an index separation are registration and print order. Print order will make a big difference in the look of the print and is a great advantage. If a color is printing too prominently, just drop it down in the print sequence.
Since the square dot pattern is already embedded in the color plates, output seps with elliptical dots at 55-65lpi and 45 degree angle for all inks. This will convert any greyscale area to halftone on output.

Got any questions?
What is index color separation?
Index separation uses a fixed grid of tiny, square dots (instead of halftones) to recreate images using a limited palette of flat colors. It’s ideal for detailed, colorful designs with high clarity.
How is index separation different from CMYK or simulated process?
Unlike CMYK or simulated separations, index separations don’t use halftone angles or variable dot sizes. This avoids moiré patterns and produces clean, consistent prints—especially on garments.
What kind of artwork is best for index separations?
Designs with complex color blending or photographic detail, where you want to avoid halftone issues, are great candidates for index separations.
How many colors will be used in an index separation?
Typically between 6 to 12 spot colors, depending on the image complexity. I optimize the color count to preserve quality while keeping printing cost-effective.
Can you work with low-resolution artwork?
Index separation is best with high-resolution (300 DPI) images, but I can clean up and enhance low-res files when needed.
Do index separations work on dark garments?
Yes. I can create an underbase layer for dark shirts to make sure colors appear vibrant and true to design.
What kind of file should I provide for the separation?
A high-resolution PSD, JPG, TIFF, or PNG file at actual print size is preferred. I can also work with vector files if needed.
What are your designer's working hours?
Designers work on Monday to Friday, from 09:00 to 18:00 (GMT+2).
What is your 7-day money-back guarantee?
All our plans come with a full 7-day money-back guarantee. If, after several design requests, you still don’t think Atexsell is the right fit for you, we will refund 100% of your initial membership fee.
