Spot Color Separation involves breaking a design into individual solid colors,
each printed separately to create crisp and vibrant outputs. This method
is widely used in screen printing for its precision and ability to
handle bold and vivid designs.
Spot Color Separations with Underbase
Spot color separation is used to separate colors can be or not mixing. Each color is represented by it’s own ink. Spot colors are used for printing text and solid line and area images, but not full color photos or designs with complex gradients.

Spot Color Separations Pantone® solid colors are widely used as matching basis for spot color separations. Practically any color may be used whether PMS or otherwise.
Spot colors are often added to all of the separation types but especially 4 color process to enhance certain colors or where out-of-gamut problems arise.
Spot color are specific colors with the highest opacity and allow for the most flexibility when printing on dark substrates.
Considerations:
- Opaque or semi-opaque inks may be used
- Color matching and best coverage when used on dark substrates
- Usually need maximum screens for a full color image
